About 10 years ago, I was a college DJ with my own hour (and later two whole hours) of radio. For pre-Internet music sharing, this was a golden opportunity to expand my musical horizons. I do now as I did then have a broad taste for music, but it is still seldom do I find an unknown (to me) genre music that intrigues me to a near obsession. So it was 10 years ago that I discovered Jungle, more popularly known as drum and bass.
Not that I didn't like other types of electronica, jungle was the only sub-genre of electronica that didn't seem to require intoxication for enjoyment. I found a two disc drum and bass compilation at the radio station. I played a bunch of tracks off those CDs intertwined with rock, jazz, jam band, and R&B. I loved those CDs so much that I swiped them from the station. But of course karma comes around full circle and both CDs have been sacrificed to the ever growing where-did-that-go pile. My best friend thought that he had possession of them and I asked him several times. Unfortunately, they never came up. I am somewhat obsessed with finding the name to that 2 disc compilation. These days there seems to an endless supply of DnB mixes, shows, and podcasts to feed my musical fix.
In the past year year and a half, I have seen several of the top drum and bass DJ's, due much in part to the Ultra Music Festival. And I cannot forget, my in-the-scene source for the latest events mixes. She is always supply the good mixes and even being the ultra-bomb DnB party hostess. WMC 2008 and Ultra would not have been half as cool, if not for a great friend.
Graduation
All this knowledge of DJs, drum and bass producers that I have been obsessing about must be put to good use. So I will spread the hymns of drum and bass and all that is funky for that matter. For my DnB graduation, I want to share with you the latest and hotest mix in my iPod: Bachelors of Science.
Bachelors of Science
This British ex-pat duo based in San Francisco, California have been making music together for nearly 10 years. With an impressive Vita of 12" releases. earlier this year, the duo released their debut album Science Fiction on the Horizon Music label. They were also featured in British electronica mag Knowledge (Kmag).
The duo is Phil "Rene" Collis and Chris Doe (formerly known as DJ Fokus). While both originally hailing from the UK, these ex-pats met while living in San Francisco.
Sounds like . . .
Upbeat dance with jazzy overtones, a splash of R&B, a twist of reggae and layered with a blend of trance and booty shaking bass. Liquid drum and bass that won't let you stop dancing.
This is a baby-making mix . . . Hot for girls and boys and for girls who like boys. All that good stuff.
Enjoy.
