Dee.P on Digg

  • An Interview with the Walrus, John Lennon of the Beatles
In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon?s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it.

While the audience waits impatiently for the final half-season of Battlestar Galactica, the cast and crew have already moved on... kind of. Tricia Helfer has been talking about her experiences on the show, from how little she knew at the start to the reaction of the cast to the end of the show... even though that end keeps on staying out of reach.

5th Annual Langerado Music Festival at Big Cypress Seminole Reservation FLAAt the very first Langerado, my friends and I were also friends with band members who opened - Hashbrown. I remember them playing at a house party in the back of the 'Ghetti (that is with and "i" and not and "o.") Just like the old college days, my friends and I jammed out in support of our rockin' brothers. Playing hacky-sack. Dancing like a fool. Times never to forget. My good friend Ari made a bootleg Hashbrown t-shirt that I wore at that show. I don't exactly remember a completely positive reaction when J (bassist, Hashbrown) saw me with the shirt, but hell, how can you really complain about a loyal follower who is spreading the word of the Hashbrown?

Not to be distracted from my main point, Langerado was a one day festival with multiple stages in one of the worst venues within 25 miles of me - Pompano Beach. Who'd have thought that Langerado would bloom into an all-out attraction that featured a diverse and numbered line-up that included the Beastie Boys, 311, The Roots. G Love and Special Sauce. And those people are just some of the acts on Friday. For all the Dead fans, Ratdog, headed by Bob Weir, also performed.

This festival was HUGH. Four days, from March 6-9, 2008. Langerado 2008 was held in the same place were Phish played their legendary Y2K 3 day festival. It was at the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation in Big Cypress, Florida off Alligator Alley. You could camp or if you were lucky like me to live close could buy a one day pass. My roommate Cassie bought my ticket for my birthday. What an awesome present. Really. Tickets for the festival were between $150 and $200 for the 4 day pass or about $95 for a single day pass. Well worth that. (Thanks again, Cassie!! It's gonna be hard reciprocating on that one, when yours comes up!)

Tragically, I actually spent zero time at the festival with Cassie. We took separate cars because she hand the 4 day pass and was camping on the festival grounds that night.  Reception sucked out there. My texts were arriving 2 hours after they were sent. So connecting with everyone that I knew there was futile. I trudged around the knots of grass (if you were there, you would just know) with Susan. She's a good sport. Trudging around in the dark was no simple task, even without sandals.

All in all, the 5th Annual Langerado Music Festival ranks at the top for quality of acts and diversity compared to other festivals I have been to. Beastie Boys headlined the day that I went, March 7. Coincidentally, March 7 is also my birthday. Needless to say my birthday rated near the all-time highs. Far surpassing my expectations, I am wholly surprised that so many quality acts got together to play in what used to be a rag-tag festival.

I have a number of videos that I have filmed. Yes, I know, they are a bit shaky at times, but I held my mini-camcorder up as I high as I could for pretty long periods. Yet again, totally worth it. I have been rendering videos from that wonderful day. Check them out on YouTube on the DragonProject channel.
